NEP 2020 in Practice: Experiential Learning for Secondary Mathematics
The National Education Policy 2020 asks us to move from rote learning toward understanding, competency, and real-world application. It is an inspiring vision. It is also easy to nod along to and much harder to translate into a Monday-morning lesson.
After completing the NEP implementation training and rethinking my own units, here is what experiential learning genuinely means in a secondary mathematics classroom.
Start With a Problem Worth Solving
Traditional lessons begin with a definition and end with practice questions. Experiential learning flips this. We begin with a situation that demands mathematics:
- How much material is wasted when we cut circles from a rectangular sheet?
- Which mobile data plan is actually cheaper for a given usage pattern?
- Can we design a ramp that meets an accessibility gradient?
The mathematics then arrives as a tool the student needs, not a hoop they must jump through.
Make Students Do, Not Just Watch
Experiential learning is physical and active. In my classes this has looked like:
- Paper-folding models to derive geometric relationships by hand.
- Spreadsheet modelling for linear programming, where students adjust constraints and watch the feasible region change.
- Student-led presentations where learners teach a concept to their peers using digital tools.
When a student explains linear programming on a spreadsheet to the class, they are operating at the highest levels of Bloom's taxonomy: analysing, evaluating, and creating.
Assessment Has to Change Too
If we teach for understanding but test for memory, students will optimise for memory. I have shifted toward tasks that ask why and what if, not just compute this. A good experiential assessment cannot be answered by pattern-matching to a solved example.
The Honest Challenges
This approach takes more preparation, more classroom time, and more comfort with a bit of controlled chaos. Not every topic fits neatly, and exam pressure is real. My compromise is to anchor each unit with at least one strong experiential task rather than trying to convert everything at once.
NEP 2020 is not a checklist to satisfy. It is a direction of travel. Small, consistent shifts toward doing mathematics, rather than merely watching it, add up to a very different classroom over a year.
